Research Facilities

Research support is provided through seminar programs, financial support for graduate student research, and campuswide and departmental research facilities. Graduate students appointed to research positions are critically important to research projects, especially in the sciences and engineering. Many outstanding facilities support research in all areas on the Davis campus. Check further for more extensive information about research support facilities available in your particular area of interest.

The University Library

The General Library at UC Davis is one of the premier research libraries in North America. In addition to Peter J. Shields Library, there are four other General Library facilities: the Physical Sciences Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library, the Agricultural and Resource Economics Library and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. The combined collections of the various General Library facilities total more than 3.5 million volumes, and more than 48,000 periodical and journal titles are received annually. An extensive variety of government documents, maps, microforms, and CD-ROMs are also part of the collection. A Law Library, under the administration of the School of Law, is located in King Hall.

Using the MELVYL(R) (this will invoke a Telnet session) Library System, our online catalog of books and journals, one can access the collections of UC Davis and the other eight UC campuses. MEL VYL(R) can be searched in the libraries, at campus computer labs, and remotely with a modem and on the Internet. A CD-ROM database network provides access to additional scholarly journal literature retrievable from the library or remote sites. Additionally, Internet terminals are available for patron use in all our facilities.

Information about library services, new full-text electronic databases, important subject-specific web sites and a current schedule of free library classes on the use of MELVYL(R) and the Internet is available on the world wide web at http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu. Librarians are also available for consultation on sources for research projects. Other computer databases are available through each of the reference departments. The libraries cooperate with the Disabilities Resource Center in providing specialized equipment to facilitate library use by disabled patrons.

Teaching Resources Center

The Teaching Resources Center offers workshops for teaching assistants in any discipline to help them fulfill their responsibilities for student writing: commenting, evaluating and assigning. Teaching Assistants (TAs) learn how to use writing to stimulate class discussions and how to coach students through the process of writing papers. TAs can request workshops through their professors or by contacting the Writing Center. The Center also offers writing seminars for graduate students to help them with their papers, proposals and dissertations.

Facility for Advanced Instrumentation

The Facility for Advanced Instrumentation supports teaching and research programs in electron microscopy, related microimaging techniques, and mass spectrometry. The electron microscope laboratory has several scanning and transmission electron microscopes with x-ray detectors and a well-equipped specimen preparation laboratory. An atomic force microscope and an FTIR-microscope complement these capabilities. The mass spectrometer facility is composed of five mass spectrometers including GC/MS, LC/MS and high resolution instruments, and offers MALDI and electrospray ionization capabilities. Analyses can be performed on substances as large as proteins, oligosaccharides, and nucleic acids. Students from all departments are encouraged to learn how to use facility instruments to support their research.

Information and Educational Technology

Information and Educational Technology (IET) provides a range of computing, communications, and media services in support of research and instruction. Facilities include: several media resource centers where students can use media production equipment and review slides and taped lectures/programs; an array of multimedia and computer labs (terminals, workstations, PCs and Macs); the Center for Advanced Information Technology (CAIT) to showcase leading- edge technology and for software/hardware evaluation; and a central Campus Access Point for information and consulting on all aspects of information technology used on campus.

Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation

The Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), a multicampus research unit located at UC San Diego, supports research and outreach on all UC campuses. With the changes in superpower relationships, the IGCC is shifting its emphasis toward understanding the tensions between developed and developing nations, and toward finding new modes to encourage international cooperation. IGCC offers dissertation research fellowships in addition to its other programs. The Institute of Governmental Affairs at UC Davis is the Campus Program Representative for IGCC on the UC Davis campus, and can provide information about fellowship and other opportunities.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility provides researchers in the biological, medical, and physical sciences access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for spectroscopy and imaging. The Facility operates six spectrometers of varying purposes and capabilities. Three horizontal magnet bore spectrometers are utilized for in vivo spectroscopy and imaging of materials and small animals, and in vitro spectroscopy of perfused organs. Three vertical bore spectrometers are used primarily for solution studies of biomolecules. All of the spectrometers are multinuclear and a large variety of high resolution, surface, and imaging coils are available for use. The Facility also has SUN and IRIS computers for off-line data processing and molecular modeling. The staff provides trainiing and consultation.

Public Service Research Program

The Public Service Research Program facilitates information exchange and collaborative research between UC Davis and public, private, and non-profit organizations. Research is interdisciplinary, generally focused on public policy issues, particularly those related to environmental concerns, and designed to provide public service. Funds are occasionally available for graduate student research, education and outreach projects.

Statistical Laboratory

The Statistical Laboratory provides statistical consulting and related programming assistance to all registered students working on unfunded research. The Stat Lab will assist students with all phases of research from the initial experiment design to running the final analysis on a computational package and interpreting the results.

Women's Resources and Research Center

The Women's Resources and Research Center (WRRC) furthers the educational, professional and personal opportunities for women through education and research. The Center sponsors conferences, workshops, lectures, colloquia, performances, and films on scholarly as well as popular topics, and provides references on campus and community resources that offer child care, financial aid, health care, counseling, and housing. The Center also houses a women's studies library of books, magazines, reports, pamphlets, and audio tapes.
